Edward VII: the half penny and the quarter anna

Quarter Anna (left) Half penny (right)

Whe in my previous post I showed an Edward VII quarter anna and a half penny side by side using a stock image of a half penny, the similarity, while there, was not really obvious.

Partly this was due to my using an image of an unworn Edward VII half penny.

So, to make a better comparison I picked up a worn Edward VII British half penny from ebay and photographed it side by side with my worn quarter anna.

While the coins are clearly different, it’s easy to see that one could be mistaken for the other in poor light, the head on the Indian coin being slightly smaller and the inscription shorter.

However, if you flip them over they’re easy to tell apart

even when worn.
